Giving back to OUR community
For my final project this year, I worked in a group with Bree and Ashley. We wanted to do something with our community and since it was the holiday season, we wanted to give back. At first, we weren't sure if we wanted to work with children or with elders, but after bashing out ideas we decided to check out a local nursing home. We got into contact and scheduled a date and time to come in for our visit.
I believe that working together helped each one of us step out of our confront zones to help our community. It was good that we had others to bounce ideas off of too! The three of us really worked hard on our project and getting to see the excitement of the residents at the nursing home really paid off.

Art
For our art piece we made a scale model of what we thought the nursing home would look like. We first found a cardboard box that we could cut down to the size we wanted. Second, my partners' and I found an image of a fireplace online and used the laser printer to engrave the design into the cardboard. Next, we started the printing on the 3D printer. The three of us went online and searched for a Christmas tree, table, and couch. In order to be able to print those objects, the files had to be turned into .obj. It took about 2 weeks with trial and error, but we got it done in enough time. While the two weeks went by, we also used paint to paint the "walls" and the fireplace. Then, we used primer and spray paint to paint the 3 objects we 3D printed. Lastly, we used hot glue to attach them to our model. In the end, this shows the word synthesis, taking 2+ ideas and combining them to make 1 product.
English
For our English portion, we created a children's book, bingo cards, and mad libs. Our children's book we wrote about Charlie and Candy Cane, who gets teased and made fun of because his stripes were uneven. When we made our bingo cards, we used holiday ideas to fill them out. The first card was a standard bingo card and the second had Santa, elves, snow, exc.... Lastly, for our mad libs we combined aspects from Frosty the Snowman and Twas the Night Before Christmas. In the end we used all three activities and synthesized them together to form one large product for English.
History
History was the most important thing we had to decide on. Since we were working with a local nursing home, we thought about many options, but came up with the idea of medicare. Over the past month, we spend many days researching what medicare was, qualifications, and what the plans are (plan A,B, and D, the main ones). Next, we came up with 5 questions to ask facility around the building dealing with medicare and the future of medicare. Then, we created a video and pieced the clips of each answer together. For the final part of our product, we created a poster with our future medicare plan. We also used some of the qualifications from medicare now and synthesized them to create new qualifications that help our plan.
